Frequently asked Questions*

Q: How many models have you built?
A: Three so far. The first was my JCB Backhoe, the second is a JCB Telehandler, and the third is a JCB Wheel Loader.

Q: Are instructions available for your models?
A: Yes, absolutely. There are links to purchase the instructions on the model pages, or by clicking on the shop link at the top of the page. The instructions were created in Stud.io and have been worked through many times to ensure their accuracy. In addition, I have put a lot of effort into making the building process as enjoyable as possible. To this end, I have used a numbered bag system in the instructions, just as Lego does – this does require you to sort all the parts into the relevant bags before building the models, but it makes the process a lot more enjoyable once you get started! When the model is built, it’s quite simple to ‘unbuild’ it back into the relevant bags.

Q: What about stickers?
A: Yes, we sell sticker sheets for the models. These are also available for purchase on the shop page.

Q: What other models are you planning to build?
A: I’d like to eventually build four vehicles from the JCB range – a backhoe, a telehandler, a wheeled loader, and a tracked excavator. The first three have been done, so the tracked excavator will be next. After that, I’ll probably do something completely different.

Q: How do you plan your models?
A: With the two models I have built so far, I have started with a schematic illustration of the actual vehicle, which can be found in many of the JCB catalogues for the actual machines. I then scale this illustration up to the size of the wheels I plan to use, figure out rough dimensions for the chassis, then go from there. In the early part of the design process, I find that there is a lot of trial and error to get basic things right – it’s often the most frustrating part!

Q: Are there any Lego building books that you’d recommend?
A: Yes! Sariel – an excellent designer – has written several fantastic books for Lego enthusiasts. I personally found The Unofficial Lego Technic Builder’s Guide to be extremely useful for understanding many of the principles of gear ratios, steering mechanisms etc. It’s also a great guide to components and for solutions to difficult problems. I highly recommend checking out Sariel’s website.

Q: How are the models controlled?
A: The three models I’ve built so far use BuWizz receiver/battery boxes. These work really well.
